How much collagen per day?
The short answer: between 2.5 g and 15 g, depending on whether it's specific bioactive peptides or non-specific collagen hydrolysate. The long answer deserves three minutes of your time.
The question of correct daily collagen dosage is one of the most frequently asked — and simultaneously the one for which the most contradictory answers exist online. Some manufacturers recommend 2.5 g, others 20 g. Who's right?
The answer lies not in the marketing department, but in clinical studies. And these show a much clearer picture than it might first appear.
Two major categories: bioactive peptides vs. hydrolysates
Before discussing doses, one distinction must be clear. Two fundamentally different product categories exist on the market:
1. Specific bioactive collagen peptides (BCP): Branded raw materials such as Verisol®, Peptan® or Naticol®, optimised through defined processes to specific molecular weights and peptide sequences. These raw materials are typically tested in clinical studies at doses of 2.5 g to 10 g per day.
2. Non-specific collagen hydrolysate: Standardised collagen without a specific peptide profile. Here, the doses used in studies are higher, typically 10 g to 15 g per day, to achieve comparable effects.
A 2.5 g product with Verisol® is therefore not "less" than a 10 g product with standard hydrolysate. It's designed differently. Comparing them on a pure gram basis is misleading.
What the studies actually show
For skin elasticity
The widely cited Proksch et al. (2014) study at the University Medical Center Kiel used 2.5 g of Verisol® over 8 weeks and demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in skin elasticity in women over 35 by an average of 7%.[1]
Asserin et al. (2015) tested 10 g of Peptan® over 12 weeks and observed a 28% increase in skin moisture and an improvement in dermal collagen density.[2]
A systematic review by Choi et al. (2019) in JDD analysed 11 randomised controlled trials and concluded: doses between 2.5 g and 10 g per day over at least 8 weeks showed consistent positive effects on skin elasticity, moisture and wrinkle formation.[3]
For nails
Hexsel et al. (2017) studied 25 participants taking 2.5 g of specific bioactive collagen peptides over 24 weeks. Result: 12% faster nail growth, 42% fewer broken nails.[4]
For hair
The evidence here is thinner. Collagen provides amino acids (especially glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) that theoretically benefit hair structure. A direct effect on hair growth or thickness, however, is not convincingly demonstrated in randomised studies. EFSA has no approved health claim for collagen relating to hair. Brands claiming this stand on thin legal ground (Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006).
The daily-dose math
Those who want to play it safe and obtain the full spectrum of study effects don't anchor to the lower bound but to the study evidence for non-specific hydrolysates. That sits at:
This is the dose at which most peer-reviewed studies with standard hydrolysates show measurable effects on skin parameters. For a product without a specific branded raw material, this is the honest lower bound for efficacy.
Why 5 g can be problematic
Many discount products contain 5 g per serving. This is a marketing dose: high enough to write "with collagen" on the pack, low enough to maximise margins. Scientifically, this dose sits in no-man's land: too little for non-specific hydrolysates, without the concentration of bioactive sequences of a branded raw material.
If you see 5 g on the pack and no branded raw material (Verisol®, Peptan®, Naticol®, etc.) is mentioned — ask yourself: on what study basis does this dosage recommendation rest?
Maximum dose: is there an upper limit?
Collagen peptides are classified as safe. Studies have examined doses of up to 20 g per day over several months without significant side effects.[5] EFSA has not set a maximum daily intake. Theoretical concerns exist at very high doses due to protein load on the kidneys — relevant only with pre-existing renal insufficiency.
For the average consumer, the practical "sweet spot" is 10 to 15 g per day. Beyond that, additional intake has no clearly proven added benefit.
The time-of-day question
One of the most frequent follow-up questions: when should collagen be taken — morning, evening, before exercise? The honest answer: it almost doesn't matter. No peer-reviewed study shows a clear advantage for a particular time of day.
What counts is daily consistency. The effects from the studies cited above are cumulative and require 8 to 24 weeks of continuous intake. A routine that's easy to maintain — like morning coffee or smoothie — beats any "optimal" time that doesn't fit your day.
